De Britse archeoloog Arthur Evans begint op 19 maart 1900 met opgravingen in Knossos op Kreta. In 1878 vond Minos Kalokerinos al de resten van een paleis uit de tijd van de Minoïsche beschaving wat zou kunnen zijn gebouwd door de mythische architect Daedalus. Evans koopt in 1899 het terrein omdat hij er zeker van was dat er een kern van waarheid moest zitten in de verhalen uit het Minoïsche tijdperk op Kreta, met name de mythe over de Atheense koningszoon Theseus die het monster Minotaurus (half stier, half mens) - dat in het labyrint van Minos woonde - overwon en doodde. Zijn opgravingen en restauraties van het paleis gaan door tot 1931. In die periode is vrijwel het hele paleis blootgelegd en zijn er veel vondsten gedaan.

It offers instead a series of suggestions on how to read the often complex images presented by Greek vases, and also explains how the vases were made and distributed.
